Politics: Jeb Bush

Posted in Politics on March 29, 2006 by rantsofatwinkie

Well, we received voicemail on our sales line from some automated system touting Jeb Bush to run for the presidency in 2008. I find that very amusing because last year I had mentioned to some friends and co-workers that I would bet money that Jeb Bush will be running. They didn’t believe me. Too bad they didn’t take my bet.

Of course, my other comment was that he would only get 2% of the popular vote, but for “some” reason, he would be elected President. But, hey, I may win that one also.

If he wins, I’m moving out of the country, that is for sure.

Me: ‘Missing White Woman Syndrome’

Posted in Me on March 14, 2006 by rantsofatwinkie

Well, nice to see I am not the only one who sees this particular trend in news coverage when it comes to crimes against people – especially white women. There are definitely views from both sides as to whether it exists or not. But, it is hard to argue that it doesn’t.

Anderson Cooper put this post in his blog entry for 3/14/06:

Diagnosing ‘Missing White Woman Syndrome’
Natalee Holloway, Lori Hacking, Laci Peterson. The list goes on and on and on.

When pretty, young women — especially white ones — are killed or disappear, media storms often follow. There is no polite way to say it, and it is a fact of television news. Media and social critics call the wall-to-wall coverage that seems to swirl around these events, “Missing White Woman Syndrome.”

That was the phrase invoked by Sheri Parks, a professor of American studies at the University of Maryland, College Park, during our interview yesterday. The phenomenon is characterized by critics as a short and cynical equation: Pretty, white damsels in distress draw viewers; missing women who are black, Latino, Asian, old, fat, or ugly do not.

I think the critics are a lot right. And I think they are a little wrong.

People in the news business, in my professional experience of nearly 30 years, are like people in every profession. They wrestle with questions of right and wrong, fairness and accuracy, perception and reality. Some are good at it. Some aren’t.

I’ve never, not even once, seen a story spiked because the victim was not attractive enough or the wrong race. But I’ve seen plenty of stories fall by the wayside, pushed down and out of the show, because a consensus develops that says, “You know, I don’t think our viewers are very interested in this case.”

Is that racism or realism? We can’t cover every murder, but ignoring them all or reporting just statistics seems irresponsible. So how should we decide whose life or loss is covered?

Before anyone accuses me of being anti-white, let me mention that my wife is white.

Me: The "Spin" on everything

Posted in Me on March 7, 2006 by rantsofatwinkie

Why must there be a spin on everything? For instance, there are debates going on about why Brokeback didn’t win the Best Movie Oscar. The award instead went to Crash.

“The Oscars opened the closet door to gay-themed films but shut it almost as quickly.”

They make it sound like Crash came out of nowhere and won the award. Those two movies were pretty much neck-and-neck in handicapping.

However, quotes like these would make you think that wasn’t so:

“Film buffs and the politically minded will be arguing this morning about whether the Best Picture Oscar to ‘Crash’ was really for the film’s merit or just a cop-out by the Motion Picture Academy so it wouldn’t have to give the prize to ‘Brokeback Mountain,”‘ said Washington Post critic Tom Shales.

“Los Angeles Times critic Kenneth Turan saw “Brokeback’s” failure as a sign that Hollywood was not yet ready to grant the topic of homosexual love mainstream respectability.”

Celeb: Scott Stapp part 2

Posted in Celeb on March 3, 2006 by rantsofatwinkie

Well, apparently I am not the only one that thinks Scott Stapp is an idiot, per my post about him from yesterday. His sex video partner in crime feels the same way.

From cnn.com:

“He’s the idiot because it’s out,” the 35-year-old Rock said. “I’m holding him responsible.”

(…)

In a recent interview with AP Radio, Stapp, 32, said he thinks the sex video was stolen from him and is meant to destroy his career.

Rock scoffed at that notion: “I’m like, what are you talking about? This tape gets out — it’s your tape — and you’re (saying) someone’s trying to sabotage your career?”

I am pretty sure we will be watching one of those True Hollywood Stories about Scott Stapp in a few years after he has hit rock-bottom so badly.

What a jack ass.

Celeb: Shut up Lars!

Posted in Celeb on March 3, 2006 by rantsofatwinkie

Everytime I see Lars Ulrich (from Metallica fame) I can’t help but blurt out, “SHUT UP, LARS!”

That dude likes to talk and talk and talk. He’s such a long winded hypocrite.

Celeb: Scott Stapp is an idiot

Posted in Celeb on March 3, 2006 by rantsofatwinkie

Maybe there are a lot of people out there that like Scott Stapp (ex-Creed frontman), but he is one of the biggest putzes I’ve ever read about.

He calls the sex tape of him and Kid Rock (two of the ugliest males I’ve ever seen) sabatoge.

“Obviously someone wants to hurt me and doesn’t want me to be successful in my solo career,” Stapp told AP Radio in a recent interview

Uh, suuuuure, Scott. That awesome solo career you have. Not hard to derail something that is already derailed.

He then goes on to say, “You don’t want to say it’s laughable, but it’s just like, my God, there’s so much stuff,” he said. “Somebody does not like you and somebody wants you to fail.”

Hmm… well, since he considered/considers himself on the level of God, maybe that is who is pissed off at him?

Karma, baby!
