Tech: M-Audio StudioPro3 Audio Monitors
I spent some of my holiday money last week and ordered up a pair of M-Audio’s StudioPro3 Audio Monitor speakers to hook up to my computer. I had read about them about 6 months ago and they were getting great reviews. At the time they were $99 but I ended up getting them for $81 shipped. M-Audio makes awesome professional grade audio monitors (what recording artists use in the recording booth) and this was their forray into an inexpensive consumer marketed speaker.
Like me, a lot of the reviewers were very skeptical of the sound that would come from these speakers.
I have to say I am very impressed with them. They don’t have booming, thumping bass but that shouldn’t be expected from speakers wihout a sub-wooder. What is very impressive is the clarity and preciseness of mid and high range. Even with my ripped MP3s I am hearing sound detail I didn’t hear before with my Cambridge Soundworks speakers.
Now I just have to find some decent speaker stands for them. Audio Monitors need to be at ear level for optimum sound so I currently have them raised up on boxes. High quality!
By the way, I was deciding between the M-Audio or the Original T-Amp amplifier (with a pair of regular speakers). The T-amp is $29.99 but has been getting rave reviews as sounding better than some $2000 professional amps. However, to get the most of the T-amp you need to have speakers that can do it justice. That means $$$ and floor space.
However, my intention was not to have a home audio theater in my office so I went with the M-Audios since they are compact, meet my needs, and my holiday money covered it easily.
If I am jonesing for some high-level audio happiness I’ll just go upstairs and listen to my Dynaudio speakers.
