Tech: Nokia N810
I picked up a Nokia N810 this week on sale plus a discount. I was a bit wary at first but after playing with it yesterday and today I am pretty happy with it. I just need to figure out (1) the vpn client so that I can connect to work and (2) figure out how to tether it to my treo 700p without having to pay Verizon more $$$ (I already have their unlimited data plan).
Updates:
- VPN client is working great. I had to mess around with resolv.conf since I am using the Cisco VPN client and it does split-routing, however.
- I had to sign up for the tethering option with Verizon in order to get my N810 to use my treo 700p. However, I can also use the tether to work with my Macbook now.

Hello, I’ve just ordered an n810 and I have a Treo 700p with Verizon. How much was the tethering option? Was it easy to setup? Thanks! Andy

Hi, it was $15 for the tether option but that is in addition to a data plan. Verizon is definitely not the cheapest option for internet access. I have their unlimited data plan.
To set it up it with the N810 it was very easy. I just had the N810 find my 700p and then answered the prompts. The basic settings are:
* Username: 1231231234@vzw3.com (Put in your phone number)
* Password: vzw

Hi, what you want to install is (1) vpnc and (2) vpnc-gui. You can download them from the maemo.org website (do a search of “vpnc” once you are on the website).
The vpnc-gui is a front-end for vpnc and makes configuration a breeze. You’ll have to get your VPN parameters from whoever you need the VPN to connect to.
Hope that helps!

I installed vpnc-gui and vpnc on my N810. I ran vpnc-gui, configured a profile to connect to my company’s Cisco VPN server. However, when I try to connect, I get:
Connecting…
Launching vpnc, please be patient…
And that’s where it sits.
Any suggestions on how to make it work?
Thanks

Actually, that is all you get once it connects.
Were you not able to connect to your office network once you connected?

I love my N810 — using it now to type this out, as a matter of fact. I’m hoping to also connect to my company’s vpn. I downloaded vpnc off the maemo site and then tried to download vpnc-gui, but I got a message saying it couldn’t install. Did anything like this happen when you installed the gui? Any idea what I’m doing wrong?

Hmm.. I have not had that problem with that app, but I have with others. Typically it boils down to the system thinking the source file is corrupt. Try and see if you can download the source from another repository.
